Tokyo Ham Fair 2003

Picture: 2003 Ham Fair

I visted the Tokyo Ham Fair 2003 during the 23rd and 24th August 2003. I stayed at the Tokyo Bay Washington Ariake Hotel which was an excellent choice as it is directly in front of Tokyo Big Sight where the Ham Fair takes place. Also there are direct "limousine" buses from Narita International airport to the hotel. This avoids any need to use the trains which although are excellent can be difficult for the first time traveller to Japan.

The photo shows the typically Japanese advertisment oustide the venue. I visited the show on both days and listened to a few of the talks including N7NG's presentation on the ARRL Logbook of the World.

At the show I had the pleasure of meeting (L-R in the photo) Nigel G3TXF, editor CQ JP Ham Radio and Roger G3SXW. Nigel and Roger were en-route to V6 for another of their successful CW DX-peditions. Roger was kind enough to sign my copy of his book Up Two which I read on the flight from 9M2 to JA. A highly recommended book!

The show had stands from the major Japanese manufacturers and a number of fascinating smaller stands from local JA clubs. These small stands were selling a wide variety of second hand gear. I resisted temptation and "only" bought myself a Force 12 C3-S beam from EDC who did a great job delivering the antenna to my hotel before I left.

The photo shows the stand of GHD Keys selling a variety of well made CW keys and paddles. I had my heart set on a GHD GN507DX but sadly they are made to order and I leave empty handed.

The show had a few interesting new HF products. The IC-7800 was being heavily promoted by Icom. Also the new Kenwood TL933 solid state amplifier was on display and Mini-Multi Antenna displayed a compact beam (HX52B) for 18 MHz through to 50 MHz which looked interesting.

Overall the show was a great experience and I had the pleasure of meeting quite a few JA amateurs who I have met on the air from 9M2/G4ZFE.
